Definition: Use of a medical device with a suction pump, tubing and a dressing (i.e. subatmospheric pressure therapy)

Negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT) is used for the treatment of a wide variety of acute wounds and chronic wounds in both inpatient and outpatient settings. The indications and the evidence behind them are constantly increasing in accordance with the new studies and growing popularity of this treatment method.

Main types of NPWT:

- Traditional NPWT (tNPWT)
- Single-use NPWT (sNPWT)
- Closed incision NPWT (ciNPWT)

International groups of clinical specialists have shared their experiences of using negative pressure wound therapy in the management of numerous wound types in various articles and documents.

EWMA has established an interdisciplinary working group which described knowledge regarding NPWT and provide an overview of its implications for the organization of care, documentation, communication, patient safety, and health economic aspects. You can download the full document: EWMA Document: Negative Pressure Wound Therapy. Overview, Challenges and Perspectives

An international group of specialist surgeons with extensive experience in NPWT convened to discuss its use today. The group used their own experiences and literatures to discuss the appropriate use of traditional and single use NPWT, and when and how to use them in complement with each other and other therapies.
