Acute wound

Definition: Sudden, marked disruption in the integrity of the skin and underlying tissue, such as a traumatic or surgical wound.

Acute wounds heal at a predictable and expected rate according to the normal wound healing phases. They can occur anywhere on the body and range from superficial scratches to deep wounds that damage blood vessels, nerves, muscles, or other body parts. Main factors involved in classification include etiology, depth of the wound, degree of contamination, and severity of the wound.
